A letter from Barbie the Polar Bear
Hello my name is Barbie the Polar Bear and I live on the sea ice off Svalbard. This is my hunting territory. I catch seals when they come up to the surface to breathe. There are many seals here on the ice, so I do not starve as long as the sea is covered by ice.
In the summer the ice melts away, and then I have to go on land. There are no seals going ashore, and I have to find other things to eat. I can rob birds' nests, if I can get close enough to them. Many birds build their nests on vertical cliffs where it is impossible for me to climb. In periods where there is no ice I often starve. I've tried to hunt caribou, but it's pretty impossible. They run too fast. I also tried to approach the places where man is living. It's pretty scary. They emit a sound, a loud bang or a crash. It makes me very scared and I run to get away from the eerie sound. | |
