Letter from Tony the Arctic Tern
Hello my name is Tony, and I'm an arctic tern. I breed here in Svalbard, but I'm not here all year. During the summer the sun never sets. I like this period when it is light all the time. I catch my food diving into the sea. During the breeding season, I have to care both for myself, my wife who is on the eggs and later also for the chicks.
We have many enemies here in Svalbard, which will eat our eggs and our chicks. There are the large gulls and the arctic foxes. Sometimes, even polar bears are on the prowl in our nest colony. We have jointly organized a defense against these robbers. |
