The Cows

The cows of India have a great story to tell. The Hindu regards the cow as a sacred animal. This is why you often see a statue of a cow in front of a Hindu temple. It means that you are not allowed to slaughter a cow. The Indians look after their cows as long as they give milk. They are nourished and cared for. When they stop giving milk, they are not cared for any longer. They are let go. Everywhere in India you see cows that are let free. They are in the streets of the big cities where they are a menace to the traffic, but the Indians do not bother. They are also found in the countryside where there are eating grass along the roads.

What are they eating? In the big cities they are eating waste. Many parts of household waste are good food for a cow. The cow has a special digesting system that can digest cellulose. Humans are not capable of digesting cellulose. Paper and cardboard are made of cellulose. It is, therefore, good food for a cow. Other things like waste from vegetables are also good food for a cow. You can say that the cows are a kind of pensioners. They eat free food and they have no obligations. They say thanks for the food by spreading their shit in the streets, and the shit are never removed.

The cows are sacred. You are not allowed to kill them. In Europe when a cow do not give any milk it will be sent to the slaughterhouse. They end as beef on our dinner table. In India the cow will live until it dies of old age.
